Mali coach Sekou Chelle has addressed viral water incident that went viral during 2023 Africa Cup of Nations

Mali coach Sekou Chelle has spoken out about the viral video that captured him receiving water poured on his head during his team's devastating loss to Ivory Coast in the AFCON 2023 quarter-final match.

The clip, which circulated widely on social media, showed Chelle visibly distressed after his team conceded a late goal to bow out of the tournament.

Chelle revealed that he began to feel dizzy and experienced a rise in blood pressure following Ivory Coast's second goal, which came in the dying moments of extra time.

"After the Elephants' second goal, I started to feel dizzy, my blood pressure was rising," he explained as per Ghanasocccernet.

"Thankfully, my compatriot poured enough water on my head to stabilize my blood pressure," he added.

The incident occurred after Mali had been in control of the game, playing with a one-man advantage and leading through Nene Dorgeles' impressive strike in the second half.

However, Ivory Coast staged a remarkable comeback, equalizing in the 90th minute through Simon Adingra's opportunistic finish before securing victory with Diakite's header in extra time.

Despite the disappointment of the defeat, Malians remain proud of their team's performance in the tournament.

Mali topped their group and defeated Burkina Faso in the round of 16, displaying a strong showing throughout the competition.

The video of Chelle receiving water poured on his head quickly became a meme, with many poking fun at the unusual sight.

While it was initially unclear whether the coach had requested the water to be poured on him, his explanation sheds light on the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Looking ahead, Chelle will likely be aiming to build upon Mali's performance when the AFCON returns, with the tournament set to take place in Morocco next year.
