‘Long live the new king of Africa’ - Drogba crowns Osimhen after signing a jersey for the Super Eagles star

Chelsea icon Didier Drogba has bestowed high praise upon Napoli forward Victor Osimhen, anointing him "the new king of Africa" in a special handwritten message on a gifted jersey.

Osimhen has become one of the biggest stars in Africa following his impressive career over the last few years.

The forward became the first African player to win the Serie A Golden Boot, scoring 26 goals to lead Napoli to their first Scudetto in 33 years.

He also earned significant individual accolades, including the 2023 CAF African Footballer of the Year and he is the second-highest goalscorer for his country.

Drogba hails Osimhen

The former Ivory Coast international signed a Chelsea shirt for the Nigerian striker, acknowledging Osimhen's prominent status in the football world.

The message read, as shared on X, "Long live the new king of Africa, my brother, Osimhen."

The Super Eagles star has also played a key role in the national team, having helped them secure a playoff ticket for the World Cup.

The striker scored a hat-trick in Nigeria’s 4-0 thrashing of Benin Republic in their final qualifying game of the series.

Osimhen has long expressed his deep admiration for Drogba, frequently citing the two-time African Player of the Year as a major influence on his career. 

The Super Eagles star has often explained how studying the Chelsea legend's playing style was fundamental to his own development.

As he continues to build his legacy, the Napoli star aims to reach even greater heights, following in the footsteps of his idol.
