The 18-year-old will now be playing in the English League One.

Budding Kenyan midfielder Zech Obiero earned promotion to the English Football League (EFL) League One with Leyton Orient in outlandish circumstances despite a 2-0 loss against Gillingham.

Obiero a product of Tottenham Hotspur's youth academy joined Leyton Orient at 14 but had to wait for three years before making his senior debut for the club against Crawley Town in April 2022.

The 18-year-old is the son of the Kenyan former footballer Henry Obiero. His brother, Micah, is also a professional footballer turning out for Wealdstone who ply their trade in the National League.

The midfielder was shipped out on a month-long loan to National League South side Cheshunt which was cut short in early March and was not included in the match-day squad for the Gillingham clash.

Orient however had a nightmare start to the game against Gillingham as Omar Beckles was handed his marching orders in the 14th minute for a last-man tackle on George Lapslie.

It only took Gillingham two minutes to capitalize on the numerical advantage as Alex MacDonald scored from the resultant free kick.

Things went from bad to worse for Orient in the 76th minute as they conceded a penalty that was expertly dispatched by Cheye Alexander to assure victory for Gillingham.

The players had to vacate the pitch in the 78th minute as the stadium was plunged into darkness following a power cut but play resumed minutes later.

Obiero will be hoping to feature for more Orient in the coming season as they return to League Two for the first time since 2015.
