José Mourinho will miss the return leg at the Bernabéu after being sent off in Benfica’s 1-0 Champions League playoff loss to Real Madrid.

Jose Mourinho will miss the decisive second leg of Benfica’s UEFA Champions League playoff tie against Real Madrid after being sent off during a heated first-leg encounter at the Estádio da Luz.

The Portuguese tactician was dismissed late in Benfica’s 1-0 defeat on Tuesday, ruling him out of the return fixture at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium next week.

Vinícius Jr strikes the winner

The only goal of the night came from Vinicius Junior, who produced a moment of brilliance in the second half.

The Brazilian winger collected the ball near the halfway line, surged past multiple defenders, and unleashed a powerful strike into the top corner to hand Madrid a slender advantage heading into the second leg.

Real Madrid, now managed by former defender Alvaro Arbeloa, held firm through 13 minutes of added time to secure the crucial away victory.

Racism allegations halt play

The match was overshadowed by controversy after Vinícius alleged racial abuse during an on-field altercation with Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni.

Referee François Letexier activated UEFA’s anti-racism protocol, pausing the match for approximately 10 minutes while discussions were held between officials and both benches.

UEFA is expected to review the incident, as well as reports of objects being thrown from the stands during the closing stages of the match.

Mourinho’s dismissal

Tensions escalated in the 85th minute when Mourinho, protesting what he believed to be lenient officiating toward Vinícius, received two quick yellow cards for dissent.

The Benfica manager reacted furiously on the touchline before being escorted away.

Under UEFA regulations, such a dismissal typically carries at least a one-match suspension, meaning Mourinho will not be present on the bench for the return leg in Madrid.

The suspension denies the 63-year-old a managerial return to the Bernabéu, where he previously coached Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, winning La Liga and the Copa del Rey during his tenure.
