Wolves owner Jeff Shi has issued a statement a few days before the unexpected news of the death of Diogo Jota.

Tragically, Diogo Jota, a fan favourite at Liverpool, and his brother, Andre Silva, were killed this morning in a car accident in the Spanish province of Zamora after a tyre blowout.

Diogo Jota was as beloved at Liverpool as he was at his previous club, Wolverhampton Wanderers.

What Wolves owner said

According to Sportal, in a recent statement by Wolves owner Jeff Shi, who just days ago, unaware of the tragic events that would unfold, commented that he "still regrets" selling the Portuguese forward to Liverpool.

“In the last eight or nine years, our biggest mistake was selling Diogo Jota. We shouldn’t have done it. At the time, I spoke with then-manager Nuno Espirito Santo about selling one player, either Diogo or Adama Traore. Nuno chose to keep Adama, believing he was crucial to our style of play, so we sold Diogo.”

Jeff Shi compared Jota's time at Liverpool with his spell at Wolves: “Of course, at the time, Diogo was picking up injuries a bit more frequently. He would be out for two months, then maybe not play so well for the next three or four, but he has been very successful at Liverpool and I’m happy for him.

"He was a very good and smart guy. If you ask me what I would have done differently if I could turn back time, it would be this: I wouldn’t have sold him.”

Jota went on to achieve significant success at Liverpool, winning the Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup. He scored 65 goals and provided 22 assists in 182 appearances, establishing himself as a key and consistent performer for the Reds.
