Mbappé backs Dembélé to win 2025 Ballon d'Or

Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé has confirmed he will not attend this year’s Ballon d’Or ceremony, despite openly backing close friend and international teammate Ousmane Dembélé to lift the award.

The ceremony will be staged on Monday night at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, with PSG’s Dembélé considered the favourite, ahead of Barcelona prodigy Lamine Yamal and PSG midfielder Vitinha.

Mbappé, who has never won the Ballon d’Or himself, revealed he will follow events from home.

“I’ll watch the ceremony on television. I hope Dembele wins,” the France captain said.

Mbappé’s boycott mirrors Real Madrid’s stance from last year, when the club collectively snubbed the ceremony amid frustration over leaks surrounding the results.

In 2024, several reports suggested Vinícius Júnior had won, only for Manchester City’s Rodri to be named the eventual Ballon d’Or winner.

Spanish outlet RMC claimed Real president Florentino Pérez was furious, leading the Madrid delegation to cancel their attendance, a policy that appears to remain in force this year.

Dembélé remains the frontrunner in predictive models, but the Ballon d’Or organisers have insisted that the outcome is still under wraps.

“No player and no club knows the winner of this year’s Ballon d’Or yet,” they said in a statement ahead of the event.

Mbappé’s support for Dembélé adds another layer of intrigue, with the Paris Saint-Germain winger aiming to secure the award for the first time in his career.
