Pisa head coach Alberto Gilardino has pointed to the physical toll of the Africa Cup of Nations as the reason for Ebenezer Akinsanmiro's subdued performance in the team's recent heavy loss to Inter Milan.
Akinsanmiro, who has been a standout performer this season, was substituted after just 45 minutes during a 6-2 defeat against his parent club, Inter.
The Nigerian international was uncharacteristically off the pace, struggling to assert his usual physicality and control in the midfield.
Since his return from the African Cup of Nations, the midfielder's performance has declined, a concern for the manager.

Gilardino speaks on Akinsanmiro's drop in form
Ahead of Pisa's upcoming league fixture against Sassuolo, Gilardino acknowledged that Akinsanmiro is still recovering from international duty and needs time to return to peak physical condition.
The coach has advised the midfielder to remain composed and concentrate on his recovery as he prepares for the match at the Stadio Romeo Anconetani.
"He was penalised physically by the Africa Cup of Nations," Gilardino stated, as reported by FC Internews. "Now he needs to stay calm and get back to his best condition."
While Akinsanmiro did not feature in any competitive matches for the bronze-medal-winning Super Eagles in Morocco, he did play in a friendly against Egypt. His time with the national team caused him to miss six league games for Pisa.
