Hansi Flick backs new goalkeeper at Barcelona

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has spoken openly about the club’s goalkeeper situation, acknowledging communication mistakes in the handling of Marc-André ter Stegen’s demotion while underlining that Joan Garcia has always been seen as the long-term No.1.

Relations between Barcelona and Ter Stegen grew tense earlier this summer when the 33-year-old was informed he would no longer be the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.

With Ter Stegen recovering from back surgery after a series of knee issues, Barça moved quickly to secure Joan Garcia from Espanyol.

The 23-year-old was registered using part of Ter Stegen’s salary allocation, but only after the German reluctantly signed a medical release.

His initial refusal to do so delayed Garcia’s registration and even saw Ter Stegen briefly stripped of the captaincy, underlining the growing friction between player and club.

What Flick said

Speaking at the Sport Bild awards in Hamburg, Flick addressed the controversy head-on, “With Joan Garcia, we have a very young, talented goalkeeper who is at a very high level. Everyone decided together that he should be the future of Barça. So, ultimately, it was clear what our approach would be.

Hansi Flick was happy with what he saw despite Levante's stubbornness.

“Whether everything has always been so good in terms of communication [with Ter Stegen]... I think there’s a lot that can be improved. From my side too.”

The German coach made it clear he wants Ter Stegen to feel supported during his recovery, but notably avoided promising him an automatic return to the starting XI.

“It’s important to me that Marc and the club have come closer together and have genuinely sought communication. For me, it’s now important that Marc comes back. He’s a top goalkeeper! He’ll get all the support he needs from us so he can truly play at his level again," he added.

For the time being, Flick has confirmed that Garcia will remain first-choice when Barcelona face Rayo Vallecano in La Liga on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Catalan club are also working to finalise the registration of Wojciech Szczęsny and the departure of Iñaki Peña, as part of their goalkeeping reshuffle.
