Former Burnley striker Charlie Austin has weighed in on the controversy surrounding Mohamed Salah, stating he sees no reason why the Egyptian star should not feature for Liverpool upon his return from the Africa Cup of Nations.
Salah, a two-time African Player of the Year, has been the subject of intense speculation following a public falling out at Anfield.
The forward's future has been thrown into doubt after a controversial post-match interview, in which he voiced his displeasure over being benched and suggested a breakdown in his relationship with the club.
The comments reportedly led manager Arne Slot to consider dropping Salah for the team's clash with Inter Milan, escalating an already tense situation.

Austin speaks on Salah’s Saga
Speaking on Sky Sports News, former Southampton and Burnley forward Charlie Austin suggested the situation had spiralled out of control prematurely.
"Look, what we are dealing with at the moment... I think it’s come too soon," Austin said. "I’d have probably envisioned this around mid-April. Then we got to the summer, they came to an agreement, and he moved on then."
Austin believes the summer transfer window would have been a more logical time for Salah and the club to decide on his future. Despite the current friction, he firmly believes Salah remains indispensable to Liverpool.
"After this time, I don't see why he doesn't play for Liverpool again after AFCON," Austin insisted. "He's Liverpool's talisman, he is Liverpool's best player."
He also highlighted Salah's crucial role, adding, "He needs to be involved in the club. Liverpool going on a poor run of form is solely on Salah, no surprise. But also, let’s be very clear: a lot of Liverpool players will be happy that Salah has taken the flak."
With the January transfer window just weeks away, Salah's future at Liverpool hangs in the balance.
Saudi Arabian clubs, who have long coveted the Egyptian superstar, are expected to reignite their interest.
