The Argentine international admitted he has spent time analysing footage of the former Blues captain, widely regarded as one of the greatest midfield goalscorers in football history, in a bid to sharpen his attacking instincts.

“He’s an inspiration,” Fernandez told Sky Sports. “I’ve watched a lot of videos of Frank since coming to Chelsea. I’ve seen how he got into those last metres of the pitch and how he got into the box.”

Fernandez explained that although Lampard briefly served as Chelsea’s interim manager, he was unable to learn directly from him in this area at the time due to his deeper midfield role.

“During the time he was our coach, I didn’t play in this position; I played further back, so I couldn’t talk to him much about it. But I’ve been watching and learning from his videos since I came to the club,” he said.

Despite adopting elements of Lampard’s style, the World Cup winner was quick to downplay any comparisons with the Chelsea great, who remains the club’s all-time leading goalscorer.

“He was an exceptional player and a legend here for Chelsea. I don’t like to be compared to him, because he has achieved a lot more here than I have. He’s an idol. I hope to follow in his footsteps at Chelsea,” Fernandez said.

Fernandez also praised current head coach for granting him the freedom to influence games higher up the pitch.

“I’ve enjoyed being able to add goals and assists to my game. The coach gives me freedom to express myself in the last few metres of the pitch and I’ve been feeling good,” he noted.
