Maresca has backed Nkunku's inclusion in Chelsea lineup against Fluminense

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has publicly affirmed his decision to include Christopher Nkunku in the starting lineup, stating the French international is playing because he "deserves" the opportunity.

Nkunku featured in Chelsea's 2-0 victory over Fluminense in the Club World Cup semi-final, a result that secured their place in the final.

Nkunku's regular appearances in the Club World Cup have come as a surprise to many supporters, especially given his limited starts in the Premier League last season.

The 27-year-old made 27 Premier League appearances in the previous campaign, with only nine coming as starts, and managed just three league goals.

His future at Stamford Bridge has also been a subject of speculation, with Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich strongly linked with a move for him in January and reportedly reigniting their interest.

What Maresca said

Despite these factors, Maresca expressed satisfaction with Nkunku's performance against the Brazilian side.

"In this moment, if Christo is playing, it is because he deserves to play. Again, I think today was good, he had some moments that he couldn’t score, we had some moments that he had some chances. But overall I think he had a good game,” Maresca commented.

The manager's vote of confidence suggests Nkunku remains a key part of his plans, at least for the immediate future of the Club World Cup.

Chelsea will now face either Real Madrid or Paris Saint-Germain in the final, a match that will provide Nkunku with another chance to prove his worth on a global stage.
