Harambee Stars attacking prospect Wilson Waweru has opened up on how life has been since completing a transfer to Irish top division side Sligo Rovers

Waweru, who signed a two-year contract, became coach John Russell’s second signing, joining from Galway United after a successful loan spell with Cobh Ramblers in 2023, where he scored 13 goals last season.

The 23-year-old has scored one goal in six league games so far this season, with his first goal being against Drogheda United on Saturday 16th March .

Eligible to play for Ireland and Kenya,  Waweru has opened up on how life has been like in his new club

“It has been great. I am settling really well. The members of the team have made me feel welcomed. The manager has made me feel welcomed as well and we are happy to win games as well,” Waweru told the club’s social media pages.

“It is a great feeling. You see my reaction as well after scoring my first goal. It was a huge boost for my confidence and I hope I will continue scoring more.”

When he signed in December, Waweru had stated that he was seeking to continue with his goal scoring form at Sligo Rovers.

“I am very happy to join the club. I see myself as an out and out number 9 and a focal point up top. I was happy with my time at Cobh last year particularly with the quality of the goals and assists.

“I am looking forward to the step up in quality in the Premier Division. I feel I am becoming a better player every year and the quality of the players that will be at the club, I feel I can bring the form with me next year,” explained Waweru.

Waweru seems to be following in the footsteps of English-born Kenyan striker Jonah Ayunga who once played on loan at Sligo Rovers. Ayunga currently turns out for Scottish Premiership side St Mirren.

The talented player, who is comfortable playing as a winger, has previously featured for Mervue United. During his time at Galway, he scored 18 goals in 91 appearances.

Waweru’s parents are both Kenyan but the youngster was born and raised in Dublin, Ireland.
