Linton Maina's full-time return to FC Koln was not enough to secure victory against Union Berlin, leaving them in a challenging position.

Harambee Stars prospect Linton Maina took to the pitch once again for FC Koln, but his efforts could not prevent the team from suffering another Bundesliga defeat, this time against Union Berlin.

Despite clocking full minutes after his cameo appearance against Freiburg, Maina witnessed Union Berlin secure a 2-0 victory on Wednesday night.

The goals, courtesy of Benedict Hollerbach and Chelsea loanee David Fofana, added to Koln's woes as they find themselves stuck in the second-last spot on the league table.

In a thrilling encounter, Maina returned to the starting line up after making a second-half appearance in their previous match against Freiburg.

Union Berlin, under the guidance of new manager Nenad Bjelica, claimed their fourth win of the season, marking only their second victory since August.

The turning point of the match came in the second half when Benedict Hollerbach scored with a superb solo effort, unleashing a powerful shot into the roof of the net.

The momentum continued for Union as Chelsea loanee David Fofana mirrored Hollerbach's goal, securing the 2-0 win with just 12 minutes remaining.

The result leaves FC Koln in a precarious position, with manager Steffen Baumgart acknowledging the challenges ahead.

"It's clear that in this situation everything is called into question — including the coach. It doesn't look good for us," he stated as per Sky.

Union, fresh off their debut Champions League campaign and a narrow 3-2 loss to Real Madrid, has now secured two consecutive home league victories.

Reflecting on Linton Maina's international eligibility, having played for Germany up to the Under-20s level, the prospect remains a potential asset for Harambee Stars.

Born to a Kenyan father and a German mother, Maina's dual heritage adds an intriguing dimension to his career.

The defeat against Union leaves FC Köln in a precarious 17th position, and as they grapple with challenges, the spotlight remains on Linton Maina and his potential contributions to help the side escape from the relegation places in the league standings.
