Inter Milan are set to face Benfica in the quarter-final of the Champions League and Sandro Mazzola has said he is confident his former team can do something special.

Two of Europe's finest will clash this evening when the Nerazzurri travel to the Stadium da Luz to take on Benfica. Both the Nerazzurri and the Aguias have previously won the competition and have, over the years, respectively, comprised some of Europe's best footballing teams.

In an interview with Milan-based publication Gazzetta Dello Sport, the former forward reflected on his own Inter team's encounters with the Lisbon giants during the 1960s, when they won the European Cup.

Inter’s performance has gone unnoticed

Inter's Serie A campaign has not gone as planned this season. The Nerazzurri's performance in the Champions League has been good as they have defeated teams like Barcelona and Porto to get to the competition's last eight.

Their opponent, Benfica, also qualified for the quarterfinals with victories over Juventus and two well-earned draws with Paris Saint-Germain in the group stage. They then destroyed Club Brugge 7-1 on aggregate in the round of 16, continuing their impressive domestic form.

Mazzola praise Inzaghi’s team

Due to their accomplishment in the Champions League this season, Mazzola believes his former team can win the tournament this season.

Speaking in an interview with Gazzetta Dello Sport, Mazzola said, “Our Inter can’t be compared to this one for a thousand reasons.”

“We were a top side, unique, but I believe that Inzaghi’s team can also do great things. They’ve shown it already, and they can also rely on an excellent midfield.”

As a result, both teams are fully aware of the enormous task that this evening's game presents.

Meanwhile, Andre Onana also feels that the Nerazzurri can aim to win the Champions League this season as they face Benfica in the quarter-final.
