Despite injury and form setbacks, Werder Bremen are not prepared to give up on Super Eagles star Victor Boniface
Victor Boniface has received a measure of reassurance over his immediate future at Werder Bremen despite a frustrating start to life in the Bundesliga and a recent injury setback.
The Super Eagles striker, who was left out of Nigeria’s 2025 AFCON squad remains under evaluation as the club monitors his recovery and weighs up its next steps.
Bremen play down early exit talk after injury blow
Speculation had grown around Boniface’s future after he missed Werder Bremen’s recent clash with FC Augsburg due to a knee injury, sparking reports of a possible early termination of his loan from Bayer Leverkusen.
However, sporting director Clemens Fritz moved quickly to calm those fears, stressing that the club’s priority is the player’s health.
“Victor is injured at the moment and we are in contact with the Leverkusen doctors. We want to let it calm down a bit for now,” Fritz said, as quoted by Deichstube. “He’ll switch off for a few days, but then we’ll have to see how it develops.”
Fritz explained that the severity of the knee issue will influence future discussions but made it clear that nothing is imminent. “After that, however, the topic of ‘sporting future’ could well be on the table,” he added, suggesting patience rather than panic within the club.
No immediate plans to cut Boniface loan short
Despite Boniface’s slow start and ongoing injury concerns, Werder Bremen have insisted there are no current plans to end the loan agreement. Fritz noted that neither the player nor Bayer Leverkusen have pushed for an early exit.
“Then we’ll see together how we continue to proceed,” he said, before adding, “As of now, neither Victor has approached us, nor are there such considerations on Leverkusen’s or on our side. First of all, it’s important that he gets fit again.”
Boniface joined Bremen on loan following a failed move to AC Milan but has struggled to find his rhythm, registering just two assists and no goals so far this season.
While the coming weeks will be decisive in shaping his future, the club’s comments suggest the Nigerian forward will be given time to recover and prove his worth before any major decisions are taken.
