Spain and Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal has received a word of caution from one of the Cules' legendary treble winners
Barcelona legend Ivan Rakitic has offered words of caution to teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, urging the youngster to enjoy his rise while staying aware of the pressures and pitfalls that come with early stardom.
Speaking to Flashscore, the treble-winning midfielder praised Yamal’s growth but emphasised that the journey ahead requires maturity and balance.
Rakitic’s warning for Yamal
Rakitic, who shared a dressing room with Xavi, Iniesta, Messi, and other greats, stressed that Yamal must carve his own path rather than be weighed down by comparisons.
“It’s all going in the right direction, and he has become aware that football has its downsides, such as injuries and the pressure he faces,” Rakitic said.
He advised the 18-year-old to stay focused and grounded despite the hype: “I think he has to follow his own path; I wouldn't compare him to the three I mentioned [Lionel Messi, Neymar, Luis Suarez].
“Barcelona and Spain have something special in him, and we all need to help him learn to handle the pressure. He is a truly special player.”
The Croatian maestro’s warning comes at a time when Yamal is under intense scrutiny, not only for his performances but also for aspects of his lifestyle off the pitch. His near-miss at the 2025 Ballon d’Or further heightened global expectations, making the need for mental resilience even more crucial.
Yamal’s big ambitions under Hansi Flick
Despite the noise surrounding him, Lamine Yamal remains fearless in setting bold goals. The Barcelona teenager, who played a pivotal role in last season’s domestic treble, insists that he wants nothing less than a clean sweep of trophies.
“I want it all. If we can keep playing at this level, everything is possible,” he declared when asked about the upcoming campaign.
Yamal also reflected on the connection between individual awards and team success. “Individual awards show that the team had a great season. Winning these things at my age makes me proud, but it also motivates me to keep improving,” he said.
With Barcelona preparing to return to the newly renovated Camp Nou for their clash against Athletic Club, the teenager expressed excitement about performing in front of a full house once again.
As Yamal continues to rise, Rakitic’s words serve as a reminder that talent alone is not enough; navigating the pressures of elite football is still a great challenge yet.
