NFF has paid glowing tribute to Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong following his retirement from international football.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has showered praise on Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong, describing him as a model professional and an exemplary leader following his official retirement from international football on Thursday.

Troost-Ekong ends his illustrious Nigeria career after a decade of committed service, leaving behind a legacy marked by passion, discipline, patriotism, and unforgettable performances on the biggest stages of global football.

What NFF said

The NFF, in an emotional tribute, highlighted the defender’s unwavering dedication since making his debut in 2015.

“Captain Troost-Ekong was a dedicated, selfless and humble leader of the Super Eagles, serving with gusto, zeal and patriotic fervour,” the federation said.

The 83-cap veteran was praised for his discipline, ambition, and positive influence, qualities he displayed even before rising to captaincy.

As the 32-year-old steps away from international football to focus on club commitments and future ambitions, the Nigeria Football Federation pledged continued support.

The federation stated, “We will do whatever we can, within our capacity, to help him accomplish his future goals and objectives within the round-leather game.”

The NFF noted that he leaves “a fulfilled man… with so much pride and sense of accomplishment,” applauding his consistency, reliability, and leadership both on and off the pitch.

Troost-Ekong’s impact on the Super Eagles extended far beyond leadership. He featured prominently in three Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, 2019, 2021, and 2023, delivering commanding performances that etched his name among Nigeria’s modern football greats.

With 83 appearances across five major competitions, Troost-Ekong retires as one of the most capped defenders in Nigerian football history.
