Super Eagles star Samuel Chukwueze is a major injury doubt for AC Milan's Serie A opener

AC Milan head into their Serie A opener against Cremonese with growing concerns in attack, as Rafael Leão is ruled out and Samuel Chukwueze battles to regain full fitness.

Manager Massimiliano Allegri now faces a selection headache ahead of Saturday’s clash at San Siro.

Leão sidelined, Allegri forced into reshuffle

The Rossoneri suffered a major setback when Leão picked up a calf injury during the Coppa Italia tie against Bari, ruling him out of the league curtain-raiser.

While early scans suggest the Portuguese winger could make his return for Milan’s upcoming trip to Lecce, his absence leaves a glaring hole in the team’s attack.

Chukwueze started just 9 matches last season in the Serie A.

Allegri is expected to pair Santiago Giménez with Christian Pulisic in the frontline, but that combination comes with its own risks, especially without Leão’s direct pace and cutting edge from the left.

The tactical reshuffle also restricts Allegri’s options to rotate mid-game, making the availability of Chukwueze even more crucial.

Chukwueze a race against time

Chukwueze’s fitness remains the biggest talking point ahead of the weekend. The Nigerian international is nursing a minor muscle problem, and while the issue is not classified as serious, the timing could not be worse for Milan.

Without him, Allegri lacks a natural wide alternative on the bench who can stretch the game or offer a different approach late on.

Beyond the immediate impact on Milan’s Serie A opener, Chukwueze’s condition is also being closely monitored in England.

Fulham, who came close to signing him in January, remain interested in his services and are watching his recovery with intent as the transfer window nears its close. For now, though, Allegri’s focus is on San Siro, where Milan’s attacking depth may be put to its first big test of the season.
