Barcelona Femeni Lose 5-Year Winning Streak Two Weeks After Oshoala's Departure

Just two weeks after the departure of Super Falcons star Asisast Oshoala, Barcelona Femeni finally dropped points in the league against Levante following five years of consecutive victories

Barcelona Femeni appear to already be missing Nigerian forward Asisat Oshoala after their remarkable five-year winning streak at home in LaLiga Femenina came to an end with a 1-1 draw against Levante, just two weeks following the departure of the Super Falcons’ star to Bay FC in the NWSL.

This draw marked the first time since February 2019 that the Catalans have dropped points in a home fixture in the league, signaling an end to an era of dominance that saw them winning all such matches for five years.

Oshoala exits Barcelona after five years

Asisat Oshoala's move to Bay FC was announced on 1 February 2024, concluding her successful five-year stint with Barcelona. During her time with the club, Oshoala became a key figure, contributing significantly to the team's success both domestically and in Europe.

Her departure to Bay FC was seen as a significant loss for Barcelona Femeni, not only in terms of her goal-scoring abilities but also her influence on the pitch and the dressing room and has also coincided with a notable shift in Barcelona Femeni's fortunes, as the team navigates through the current season without her.

Barcelona’s incredible streak comes to an end

Following Oshoala's move, Barcelona Femeni managed to secure comfortable victories against Sporting Huelva and Sevilla, with scores of 4-0 and 3-0, respectively. However, the streak of victories was halted by a resilient Levante side, which managed to secure a 1-1 draw. This result marked the first time Barcelona Femeni had dropped points at home in LaLiga Femenina since their 3-2 defeat to Sporting Huelva back in February 2019.

Barcelona's draw against Levante was not only a rare taint on their otherwise stellar home record, but also the first time they had dropped points home or away in the 2023/24 league campaign. Prior to this match, Barcelona Femeni had secured victories in all 16 of their opening matches, showcasing a level of consistency and dominance that has become synonymous with the team in recent years.
