Arsenal defender Pablo Mari is set to join Serie A side Monza this summer on a permanent basis after spending this season on loan at the club.

The defender has been on loan to Monza since the beginning of the current campaign after falling out of the pecking order at the Emirates.

Mari has also helped his team stay in the Italian top division for the upcoming season and will join them permanently for £5.9 million at the end of the season.

Monza secure Mari after avoiding relegation

Mari joining the Monza was dependent on the Serie A club avoiding relegation this season which has been achieved.

The Italian team is currently sitting 18 points above the relegation zone with just five games remaining this season, according to a report from from the previous year, but only if Monza were able to stay up.

Mari is likely to be the first of many on-loan players to depart permanently this summer, and a number of other players are also set to leave at the end of the current campaign.

Arsenal to sell fringe players

The Gunners are prepared to let go of some players in the summer as they look to bolster their transfer budget for next season.

The names of several players who are now on loan and have recently been linked with a move away from the club with the likes of Nicolas Pepe, Nuno Tavares, Albert Sambi Lokonga, and Charlie Patino surplus to requirement.

David Ornstein of The Athletic reported on Monday that Patino, 19, was eager for regular playing time next season and that the Gunners were willing to facilitate his transfer this summer.

The Gunners defeated their London rivals Chelsea on Tuesday and are one point behind Manchester City on the league table who also have one game in hand.

With the season gradually coming to an end, Arteta’s side will be hoping Man City can slip up so they can take advantage and move back to the top of the table.
