After rejecting Nigeria's Victor Boniface, AC Milan have now turned their attentions to a Chelsea flop
AC Milan’s striker hunt is turning into one of the longest-running transfer sagas of the summer, and the latest twist has put Chelsea’s Christopher Nkunku in the spotlight.
After missing out on several high-profile deals, the Rossoneri are now looking to the French forward, who has fallen out of favour at Stamford Bridge, as their next big attacking option.
From Boniface setback to Nkunku pursuit
The San Siro club’s pursuit of a top striker this summer has been filled with roadblocks and disappointments.
Victor Boniface looked like the perfect fit to lead Milan’s frontline after his blistering run with Bayer Leverkusen, but his medical scuppered the move before it even materialised.
Just when fans thought Sporting CP’s Conrad Harder would be the backup plan, that deal too collapsed in dramatic fashion, leaving Milan scrambling yet again.
With preseason nearly over, the urgency has grown, and Milan have shifted their attention to Chelsea’s Christopher Nkunku.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that the Rossoneri have already made enquiries, seeing him as a viable solution to their striker crisis.
Nkunku’s Chelsea struggles open him up to Milan opportunity
Once considered one of Europe’s hottest attacking prospects, Nkunku’s move to Chelsea for €60m in 2023 has not gone to plan.
Injuries, inconsistent form, and a lack of fit in Enzo Maresca’s plans have left the French international on the fringes of the squad.
With Chelsea open to a departure, and Nkunku eager to relaunch his career, Milan see a potential win-win scenario.
A loan with an option to buy at the end of the season is currently the most likely structure of the deal. Nkunku’s contract with Chelsea runs until June 2029, which makes a straight purchase tricky, but Milan believe this format gives them flexibility while addressing their immediate needs.
With competition reportedly coming from Inter and Aston Villa, Milan will need to act quickly if they want to turn this pursuit into a reality.
