AFCON 2025: 'I don't want to say' - Chelle admits three costly mistakes in Super Eagles failure
Eric Chelle didn't hold back. And honestly? We needed to hear it.
Despite falling short of the final in a 4–2 penalty shootout loss to hosts Morocco, Chelle remains optimistic about the future of Nigerian football and is already looking toward the 2026 campaign and upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
"If God Gives Me the Chance"
Speculation regarding Chelle's future has been rife, especially with reports of interest from nations like Tunisia and Angola.
However, Chelle used his latest press conference to signal his intent to stay and build on the foundation he has laid over the past year.
"If God gives me the chance to be the coach after AFCON, I'll love to bring in more players for the team," Chelle stated.
A squad shake-up on the horizon?
Chelle’s comments suggest that he is already identifying areas for improvement following the technical "drop" he noted in the semi-final.
There are beliefs a "squad shake-up" could involve:
Midfield Reinforcements: Finding "press-resistant" midfielders to support Alex Iwobi and the aging Wilfred Ndidi.
Youth Integration: Bringing in more of the Europe-based dual-nationality players who have been on his 54-man radar.
Addressing Fatigue: Ensuring the team has the depth to maintain his high-intensity "diamond" system throughout a grueling tournament.
The NFF's Decision
While Chelle has expressed his desire to continue, the final decision rests with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
Chelle was appointed in January 2025 on a two-year contract with a mandate to reach the AFCON final.
While he narrowly missed that target, his record of 12 wins in 17 games and the team's record-breaking scoring run are expected to weigh heavily in his favour
Focus on the Bronze Medal
Before any contract talks begin, Chelle and his Big Family have one final task: defeating Egypt in Saturday’s third-place match.
A win in Casablanca would secure Nigeria’s 9th AFCON bronze medal and provide the perfect springboard for the new era Chelle is promising.
