Three Kenyan referees are in line for handsome cash rewards when they officiate at the delayed 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire

Kenyan referees Peter Waweru Kamaku, Gilbert Cheruiyot and Stephen Yiembe will be rewarded handsomely when they officiate at the delayed 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire.

The tournament, which will kick off on January 13 and end on February 11, 2024, will be officiated by 26 centre referees, 30 assistants and 12 VAR officials.

Besides a lump sum payment based on their performance at the tournament, the referees at the AFCON will also be paid $1,200 (Ksh188,398) per match.

Former Confederation of African Football (CAF) president Ahmad Ahmad increased the amount paid to officials from $750 (Ksh117,749) to $1,200 (Ksh188,398) per match upon his election in 2017 and there has not been any indication if the figures will be revised for the 2023 tournament.

Waweru, a well-respected centre referee, will be officiating at his third straight AFCON tournament after making his debut at the 2019 edition in Egypt before returning for the delayed 2021 event in Cameroon last year.

Waweru, a holder of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Pure Mathematics and a senior lecturer at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, is highly experienced at this level, having also officiated the African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament and U20 World Cup.

Meanwhile, it will be the second straight tournament for Cheruiyot who was also in Cameroon in 2022.

Cheruiyot and Yiembe are among the 30 assistant referees who will be pivotal for the tournament that will see Senegal seek to defend their title.

Yiembe will be making his AFCON debut after officiating the AFCON U23 final between Morocco and Egypt in July.
