Former Super Eagles defender has expressed concern over FIFA’s delay in ruling on the NFF’s petition against DR Congo.

Former Nigerian international Ben Iroha has expressed unease over the delay by FIFA in delivering a verdict on a petition filed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) against the DR Congo.

The NFF had lodged a complaint alleging that DR Congo fielded ineligible players during the 2026 World Cup qualification playoff.

What Iroha said

Speaking from his base in Texas, USA, Iroha warned that the uncertainty surrounding the case could disrupt the Super Eagles’ build-up to the crucial intercontinental play-off scheduled for March.

The 1994 Africa Cup of Nations winner stressed that clarity is essential, given the magnitude of World Cup qualification matches.

“It’s just a week to the end of February, yet we’re yet to hear from FIFA what their verdict is on such a crucial matter,” Iroha said.

He added, “We expected that by now, FIFA would have come out with its verdict based on its findings, so that the team that its verdict eventually favoured would begin planning and preparation.

“Knowing the crucial nature of a World Cup qualification game, I think by now the two parties should have known their fate and then settle down for preparation on how to get the job done,” he added.

Despite his concerns about the delay, Iroha remains hopeful that the outcome could swing in Nigeria’s favour.

“Why not?” he responded when asked about the Super Eagles’ chances.

He continued, “FIFA has a set of rules and procedures on issues relating to players’ nationality switches. The Nigeria Football Federation, which filed the petition in the first place, did not just wake up and begin to write a petition. They must have gone through the rule book and checked their facts properly.”

If the ruling favours Nigeria and the team goes on to win the intercontinental play-off, it would secure the Super Eagles’ seventh appearance at the FIFA World Cup finals.
