Favour Ashe and Godson Brume won their first South Eastern Conference Indoor Championships medals on Saturday.

Two Nigerian college athletes were on the podium for their various schools at the South Eastern Conference (SEC) Indoor Championships, having Favour Ashe and Godson Brume win the 60m title and bronze medal respectively.

Ashe, in his first season as an Auburn University student, blazed past his peers running a brilliant Season Best (SB) of 6.52s.

He was the pre-race favourite for the title, having the fastest times in the conference throughout the season and coming to the championships with a leading time of 6.53s.

The speedster promised to win the title and go sub-6.50s but couldn't do that after he appeared to have sustained an injury in his qualifying heat a day earlier, holding his right hamstring immediately after the race, where he clocked 6.54s.

The same scenario happened in the final post-race holding his right hamstring and couldn't wait for an interview, which suspects he probably ran with a problem in his leg.

Notwithstanding, it was good to see him finish the race with the needed gold medal, ensuring Auburn won the event for the second time in three years after Dante Brown won in 2021.

Meanwhile, Brume had a fast finishing last 30m to snatch the bronze medal in 6.64s behind University of Kentucky's Jordan Anthony with 6.57s. It is Brume's first college medal for Louisiana State University (LSU).

The Nigerian duo will now work towards medalling at the NCAA Indoor Championships in two weeks, becoming the first athlete from the country since Divine Oduduru in 2019, when he won the 60m title.
