Onyeka, who joined the Sky Blues during the January transfer window, is in line to make his debut in today’s Championship clash against Oxford United, with expectations already high surrounding his impact in midfield.

What Lampard said

Speaking to the Coventry Telegraph, Lampard highlighted the qualities the Nigerian international brings to the squad, particularly his physical presence and top-level experience.

“He’ll hopefully bring his qualities, which we know a lot about in terms of his physical presence in midfield, his attributes for winning the ball back and driving with the ball,” Lampard said.

The former Chelsea boss also pointed to Onyeka’s pedigree, noting his exposure to elite competition both at club and international level.

“He’s obviously played at a higher level in the Premier League and, as we’ve seen him recently in AFCON, played to a very high level, so we think he’s a good addition for us,” he added.

Lampard further explained that Onyeka offers a different dynamic to Coventry’s existing midfield options, which could prove vital during the crucial stages of the season.

“He brings a different quality and probably a different profile to the midfield players that we’ve got. The profile is slightly different, and I think that helps us in terms of the options and the competition in the middle of the park for us,” Lampard noted.

Coventry City are currently battling for a place in the promotion mix, and Onyeka’s arrival is seen as a timely reinforcement as the club looks to strengthen its squad depth and experience for the run-in.
