AFCON 2025: Benin vs Botswana preview, prediction, team news, and head-to-head

In an important fixture that will shape the group D table, Benin will face Botswana on Saturday afternoon at the Stade Olympique de Rabat, after both teams failed to score in their last outing of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Both teams lost their opening games and are now eager to get their first points in the tournament. A win here is important if they want to stay in the race for a spot in the knockout stage in Morocco.

Benin vs Botswana preview

The Squirrels of the Republic of Benin defeated Lesotho 4-0 to move ahead of the Super Eagles of Nigeria and keep World Cup hopes alive.

Benin heads into this match after a close 1-0 loss to DR Congo in their first game. They controlled much of the match and had 12 shots, but an early goal from Theo Bongonda made the difference.

Former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr, who is in charge of the team, has a good structure, but will need his boys to be more clinical in front of goal.

Now sitting third in Group D, the Cheetahs understand that they need a win here, or their final match against Senegal could be a huge challenge.

Botswana had a tough start to the tournament, losing 3-0 to the reigning champions, Senegal. Despite the scoreline, they stayed in the game for long stretches thanks to goalkeeper Goitseone Phoko, who made several top saves against big names like Sadio Mane and Nicolas Jackson.

Now at the bottom of the group, Botswana must step up in attack, especially after failing to register a single shot on target in their opener. The Zebras are under pressure to perform, and this fixture will be a perfect opportunity to get their first point.

Benin vs Botswana head-to-head

Benin and Botswana have not faced each other often in major competitions, but Benin slightly edges it when it comes to CAF rankings and tournament experience.

Looking at recent performances, Benin has shown some strength in intense games, picking up key wins against Rwanda and Lesotho during qualifiers. Botswana, meanwhile, has been inconsistent.

Benin vs Botswana team news

The Super Eagles of Nigeria get a World Cup lifeline, as after losing to the Benin Republic, Rwanda promises to be better against South Africa.

Benin is likely to stick with the same key players from their match against DR Congo. Steve Mounié will wear the armband and lead the attack, with creative spark Rodolfo Aloko playing just behind him.

The good news for Gernot Rohr is that he has no new injury worries, but might bring in Tosin Aiyegun to add some much-needed speed up front.

For Botswana, all eyes will once again be on goalkeeper Goitseone Phoko, who put in a standout performance against Senegal.

Captain Thatayaone Ditlhokwe will marshal the backline, while Tumisang Orebonye will be the main threat up top. Morena Ramoreboli could set up a deeper midfield to try and slow down Benin’s short-passing game.

Benin vs Botswana probable line-ups

Benin vs Botswana prediction and betting tips

Botswana might have put on a brave defensive show, especially with Phoko pulling off heroics in goal, but Benin's class in midfield and slick passing could prove too much this time.

Bettors on Livescorebet should expect a low goals affair in this fixture, possibly with the Cheetahs scoring the only goal of the match.

Prediction: Benin 1-0 Botswana
