Legendary Nigerian midfielder Mutiu Adepoju has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of his former Super Eagles teammate and iconic goalkeeper Peter Rufai.

The former Super Eagles goalkeeper died on Thursday, July 3, at the age of 61 after a prolonged illness.

Adepoju, who shared some of Nigeria’s greatest football moments with Rufai in the 1990s, took to his official Facebook page to pen a heartfelt tribute, describing the former goalkeeper’s death as a devastating loss for African football.

Mutiu Adepoju and Peter Rufai were key figures during the golden era of Nigerian football. Together, they lifted the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia and represented Nigeria at the USA '94 and France '98 FIFA World Cups.
The duo also featured in the 1995 FIFA Confederations Cup, where the Super Eagles finished fourth.
