7 facts you should know about the WTT Lagos Contender

What you should know about the maiden edition of the WTT Contender Lagos as the battle for points needed to secure places at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in France is set to serve off.

The 2023 World Table Tennis, WTT, Contender is set to serve off in Lagos for the first time next week.

WTT Lagos serves on Monday with the Centre of Excellence becoming the second-ever city to host the global showpiece.

With several top table tennis players set to go head-to-head, here are seven facts you should know about the WTT Contender Lagos according to world table tennis

WTT Lagos: The facts

Venue: The 2023 competition will be held at the beautiful Molade Okoya Thomas Indoor Sports Hall at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere.

The WTT Lagos will last for seven days, with the first day of the event slated for Monday. It will be held from June 12 to Jun 18, 2023.

The qualifying draw will be held on the first three days of the competition before the main draw takes over.

5 African countries are in Lagos

A total of 25 countries will face each other, with five of them from the African continent.

The five countries are host Nigeria, Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, Egypt, and Algeria.

There will be five (5) disciplines

 The players will compete in five different disciplines at the WTT Lagos. The disciplines are Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, and Men’s Doubles.

The other two disciplines are Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles.

Only two Nigerian men in the main draw

Nigeria will be represented by just two players in the men’s main draw.

Taiwo Mati is one of two Nigerians in the main draw.

Taiwo Mati and Olajide Omotayo are the only Nigerians in the Men’s Singles main draw. Both players made the list as wildcards.

4 women to represent Nigeria

While there are two men in the men’s singles main draw, there will be four women in the women’s category.

The women’s contingent will be led by superstar Faitmo Bello and Offiong Edem, who is one of the three wildcards.

$75,000 as prize money

The 2023 WTT Lagos will see the players compete for honours with $75, 000 up for grabs.

A breakdown of the prize money shows that both the winner of the men’s and women’s singles will take home a $5, 000, with $2, 500 for the finalists.

Quadri Aruna will not compete at the World Table Tennis Contender in Lagos.

$1500 awaits the semifinals while $1025 will be given to players who make it to the last eight.
