'We played almost all of last season without Mudryk' - Maresca opens up on Chelsea's search for a winger in the transfer market

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has confirmed the club's plans to strengthen their wing options before the new Premier League season.

Mudryk joined Chelsea from Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023 for €100 million, but his time at the club has been inconsistent.

Since his move, the Ukrainian has scored just 10 goals in 73 appearances across all competitions.

However, he missed the whole of last season due to drug allegations, with Maresca hinting on bringing in a new winger this summer.

"Mischa is a Chelsea player. As long as he's a Chelsea player, I'll trust all Chelsea players," Maresca told reporters, via Sportal in Philadelphia, ahead of Friday's Club World Cup match against Brazilian side Flamengo.

Mudryk hasn't played for Chelsea since November 28, 2024, following a provisional suspension by the FA for an "adverse analytical finding in a routine urine test." He faces a ban of up to four years.

Maresca said he hadn't been in contact with Mudryk since the Europa Conference League final in Poland at the end of last month. "The last time I spoke to him was in Poland, and he was fine. I haven't spoken to him since, but we'll definitely be in touch in the next few days or weeks," he added.

"We played almost the entire last season without Mischa and looked for solutions with academy players like Tyrique George, but we've decided we need to bring in a winger. It's clear we need to improve in that position," Maresca admitted.

Chelsea face a crucial Club World Cup Group D match against Flamengo on Friday, with Maresca hinting at squad rotation due to the heat and humidity in Philadelphia.

"It's not easy because of the temperature. That's why we'll try to rotate players. Brazilian teams are used to these conditions, but we'll do everything to win," he said.

Flamengo, captained by former Atletico Madrid and Chelsea player Filipe Luis, are top of the Brazilian league and have lost just one of their last 16 matches.

"They are a very good team, they play attractive football, it's a pleasure to watch them. Like every Brazilian team, they have a lot of technical players, and we'll have to perform at our best if we want to win," Maresca concluded.

Filipe Luis fondly remembers his time at Chelsea: "I had the chance to win the Premier League with Mourinho and the League Cup, so two titles in one season, and I was really happy there. It will be a special moment for me."
