Aston Villa boss Unai Emery made a revelation after Manchester United's loss to Chelsea on Friday.

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery was not surprised that Manchester United were beaten by Chelsea on Friday

The Spanish manager was informed that the Blues defeated Ruben Amorim’s men at Stamford Bridge, thereby seeing Enzo Maresca’s team leapfrog the Villans, who had temporarily overtaken the West London club after a 2-0 success over Tottenham Hotspur.

Marc Cucurella's 71st-minute goal secured the points for Chelsea in West London, compounding United's struggles with their 18th league loss of the season.

What Emery said

Emery's statement came during his post-match press conference, delivered with a smile and a laugh, suggesting a lack of surprise at the Red Devils’ loss.

The Villa boss acknowledged that his team are focused on their pursuit of European qualification, having defeated Tottenham, who will face United in next week’s Europa League final.

"How's it going with Chelsea?," said Emery. "Finished 1-0, okay we expected it.

“It’s not in our hands. We are winning. But other teams are as well, they are being demanding, and they are getting their points.”

Fifth-placed Villa are level on points with Chelsea in fourth and are one point clear of Manchester City, having played a fewer game, but they have an inferior goal difference.

What’s next for Aston Villa?

Emery’s team travel to Old Trafford on the final day, keen to record maximum points against the Europa League finalists.
