As the club’s relegation to Ligue 2 was confirmed, one of their most high-profile players, Wahbi Khazri, nearly came to blows with his own supporters after a tense confrontation at the Mosson Stadium.

Montpellier’s relegation sparks tensions

Montpellier’s fate was sealed even before kickoff against Stade de Reims, thanks to Le Havre’s draw with AS Monaco.

After a season filled with financial chaos, fractured dressing room relationships, and mounting criticism from the stands, Montpellier’s campaign has ended in disaster.

Their match against Reims at least halted an embarrassing 11-game losing streak, delivering a goalless draw and their first clean sheet of the season, but by then, the damage was well beyond repair.

Experienced players like Téji Savanier and Wahbi Khazri have been the primary targets of fan frustration, and the atmosphere reached a toxic peak on Sunday.

As both players came off the bench, they were greeted by a chorus of boos from their own supporters. After the match, chants mocking the players' physical conditions rang out as fans sang "A calzone for Khazri, a snack for Téji,” referencing accusations that both stars had struggled with their weight throughout the dismal season.

According to reports from L’Équipe, ex-Tunisia international star Khazri did not take the insults from the fans lightly.

The former Bastia and Sunderland man, visibly enraged, attempted to confront the fans who had been mocking him and had to be physically restrained to prevent a full-blown altercation.

Following the altercation, Khazri is set to leave Montpellier at the end of the season, with his contract expiring in a few weeks. Téji Savanier and several other senior players are also expected to move on, as the club braces itself for a major rebuild in Ligue 2.
