A former Chelsea star will return to Barcelona this summer and could be set for another stint at the club.

Spanish midfielder Oriol Romeu is set to return to Barcelona after a loan spell at Girona, as the Blanquivermells will not be making his loan move permanent.

The 33-year-old former Chelsea star made an emotional return to Girona last summer on a loan deal from Barcelona with an option to buy. However, he failed to replicate his performance from his first stint, which earned him a move to Barcelona.

Romeu set to return

According to Barca Times, Girona will not sign Romeu. Hence, he will return to Barcelona when his contract ends next month.

The Blaugrana signed Romeu from Girona in the summer of 2023 as a low-cost defensive midfield option at Xavi Hernandez’s request. However, he struggled at the club and was shipped back on loan the following season.

Oriol Romeu joined Chelsea as a teenager in 2011

Romeu only managed 17 starts for a Girona side that struggled this season, compared to the 33 he had in the 2022/23 season. His performance level also left a lot to be desired, and after having failed to return to European football, they have decided against buying him permanently.

Meanwhile, Romeu could be set for his third stint at Barcelona. His first came in the 2010/11 season when he earned promotion from Barca B. He was then sold to Chelsea, where he barely played before leaving in 2015 for Southampton. He played his best football for the Saints before the 2022/23 season at Girona, in which he earned the second stint at the Camp Nou.
