FIFA president Gianni Infantino defended the Club World Cup from its most recent critics.

FIFA’s ambitious Club World Cup tournament is finally underway. While it has been praised for some positives, like platforming clubs on other continents to show they can compete with their European counterparts, the criticisms have been ceaseless.

The competition ‘nobody’ wants

One of the main criticisms of the Club World Cup is that it was adding even more games to an already jam-packed football calendar, especially at a time when players should be resting.

LALIGA’s president, Javier Tebas, tagged it the competition nobody wants, and his sentiments had been echoed by organisations like FIFPRO.

The weather in the US, immigration policies, fixture scheduling, scanty stadiums, and the absence of some of the best teams in the world are other points of criticism the competition has suffered.

What Infantino said

There is no mistaking that the competition is Infantino’s brainchild, and it says so on the trophy, as his name can be seen twice on it. First, an inscription naming him as the founding president of the competition and another crediting him for being the “inspiration” behind the tournament.

The FIFA president marketed the competition intently, and now, he is defending its merit. “So, maybe some criticise it a little bit, but it's something new. It's something special,” Infantino said when speaking in Manhattan this weekend, according to the Daily Mail

“It's a real World Cup with the best teams and the best players. It was about time that somebody invented a World Cup for club teams.

“Since 100 years, we know which is the best country in the world, but, until today, we do not really know which is the best team in the world. So, we thought it might not be a bad idea to create a World Cup for teams to decide.

“I think the players who play they are loving it. Harry Kane gave an interview saying, ‘it's a fantastic competition. It's beautiful. They (players) love it. Those who are not there, of course, they would love to be there.”
