Super Eagles striker Cyriel Dessers set to leave Rangers for AEK Athens on a £30,000-a-week deal after scoring 51 goals in two seasons, despite divided fan opinions.

Nigerian striker Cyriel Dessers appears poised to leave Scottish giants Rangers this summer after two prolific seasons in Scotland.

According to reports from Daily Record, Dessers has agreed on a £30,000-a-week deal with Greek side AEK Athens, with only the transfer fee between the clubs left to be finalised.

Divisive yet prolific at Rangers

Dessers has been a polarising figure among Rangers supporters despite his impressive goal-scoring record since his move to the club.

In his two seasons at Ibrox, the 30-year-old Nigerian forward has scored 51 goals and provided 13 assists, including topping the Scottish Premiership scoring charts last season with 18 goals and six assists.

His goal against Ghana and assist against Jamaica helped Nigeria’s Super Eagles clinch the Unity Cup title recently, further strengthening calls for his more international opportunities with the Super Eagles.

While some fans have criticised Dessers for missed chances and inconsistency, his resilience and goal output have been undeniable, making him a key player for Rangers.

AEK Athens ready to seal the deal

AEK Athens have identified Dessers as their top target this summer, prepared to offer him a lucrative contract reportedly worth around €1.8 million annually (approximately £30,000 per week).

The Greek club, former Super League champions, are keen to finalise the transfer and are expected to negotiate a fee with Rangers, who have set an asking price of around £5 million.

The move would represent a big step for Dessers, who is looking to embark on a new chapter in his career after helping Rangers to a strong league finish and notable cup runs.

Dessers’ potential switch to AEK Athens would mean the end of a memorable stint in Scotland, where, despite divided opinions among fans, his goal-scoring exploits and contributions to both club and country have been impressive.

Dessers is reportedly interested in a move to Athens.

The transfer also signals Rangers’ intent to reinvest in fresh attacking talent as they prepare for the next season.
