Patrice Evra is set to make his MMA debut with PFL

Former Manchester United and French national team defender Patrice Evra has revealed why he joined MMA.

Evra is set to make his MMA debut with the Professional Fighters League (PFL) on May 23 at the Accor Arena in Paris.

The 43-year-old soccer legend, who retired from football in 2019, has been training with PFL stars, including French kickboxing sensation Cedric Doumbe.

Evra credits Doumbe's electrifying performances in Paris for drawing him to the sport.

"It's something I always wanted to do. I watch it and you know Cedric Doumbe, the show he did in Paris, it was just amazing," Evra said in an interview with PFL Europe.

Doumbe's knockout win over Jordan Zebo in just nine seconds showcased his prowess and created a buzz around PFL Europe's events in France.

Evra chose PFL over other options due to the promotion's energetic atmosphere in Paris.

He said, "A lot of people, they told me the atmosphere in Paris for the Cedric Doumbe versus Jordan [Zebo], they say many people, they never feel this kind of atmosphere. So, [it] is [an] obvious choice.

“I want also for the French people to see me another way. I was the captain of France, national team of football, and now, they're going to see me in the cage."

Evra's star status has garnered attention from top MMA fighters, including Khabib Nurmagomedov, who reached out to him after his signing was made official.
