The heated final minutes saw chaos erupt, leaving key players like Antonio Rudiger and Jude Bellingham facing possible suspensions that could rule them out of the season’s final El Clasico.
Rudiger explodes with rage as Real Madrid lose their cool
As the final minute of stoppage time ticked away at La Cartuja, tensions between Real Madrid and the officials hit a boiling point.
After referee Ricardo De Burgos Bengoetxea called a foul on Kylian Mbappe for a challenge on Eric Garcia, the Real Madrid dugout reacted with a furious outburst.
Players like Lucas Vazquez and Vinicius Junior stormed onto the pitch in protest, but it was Antonio Rudiger who took things to another level.
Reports suggest Rudiger threw an object toward the referee and there was video evidence showing that he had to be physically restrained by teammates and coaching staff from escalating the situation further.
Unsurprisingly, Rudiger was shown a red card, as was Lucas Vazquez, with Jude Bellingham also receiving his marching orders after the final whistle.
Future El Clasico appearances in serious doubt
The Spanish Football Federation’s Disciplinary Committee will now have the unpleasant task of deciding the fate of these players, but early fears are that Rudiger could face a lengthy ban.
A previous case in 2012, saw Granada star Dani Benitez banned for three months for throwing a bottle at an official, and more recently, Getafe’s Nigerian midifelder, Chrisantus Uche, received a three-match ban for his aggressive behaviour towards a referee in LaLiga.
With Barcelona and Madrid set to clash again in just two weeks at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys, the looming threat of suspensions for Rudiger, Bellingham, and possibly others could have huge implications.
If the Disciplinary Committee decides that the red cards from the Copa del Rey final extend into La Liga fixtures, it would mean Madrid heading into one of the biggest games of their season without some of their most crucial players.
