Arsenal were able to fend off Brentford’s pressure and secure an important victory which took them to the next round of the Carabao Cup.

Arteta’s men were looking to get back to winning ways after playing a 2-2 with Tottenham in the North London derby on Sunday.

However, they were able to carve out a 1-0 despite all the pressure thrown at them by Brentford.

Reiss Nelson's first-half goal after an error was made by a Brentford defender was enough to seal the victory for the Gunners.

As it happened

Brentford featured Frank Onyeka and Mathias Jorgensen while Neal Maupay missed out for the hosts because he is cup-tied, after playing in the second round for Everton.

While Arteta started Aaron Ramsdale in goal for Arsenal and also handed Emile Smith Rowe a first start since May 2022. There is also a debut for 19-year-old forward Charles Sagoe Jr.

Only Ben White, Gabriel and Eddie Nketiah retained their places in the side from the north London derby draw with Tottenham. Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Leonardo Trossard are all rested.

Arsenal started the game well and took the lead early on from a mistake made by a Brentford defender.

The Gunners took advantage of a poor back-pass and the ball ended up at the feet of Reiss Nelson who tucked home.

Brentford tried to be more composed and look for a way to get an equaliser but their efforts were blocked by the Arsenal defenders with the referee blowing the half-time whistle.

The second half started and Brentford came all out and put pressure on Arsenal as they looked for an equaliser.

Despite all the pressure from Brentford in the second half, Arsenal were able to hold their ground till the final whistle.

Arteta’s men were able to see off their opponent in a 1-0 victory and qualify for the 4th round of the Carabao Cup.
