Maresca is leaving Neto's Club World Cup decision to the Portuguese star after Jota's tragedy

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has confirmed that Pedro Neto will be allowed to decide for himself whether he will feature in Friday’s Club World Cup quarter-final against Palmeiras, following the tragic death of his friend and international teammate, Diogo Jota.

The Chelsea winger, visibly shaken by the news, was excused from training as the team prepared for the clash.

The death of Liverpool star Jota, who had shared both club and country bonds with Neto, has cast a sombre mood over the Blues’ training camp.

What Maresca said

Speaking during the pre-match press conference, Maresca admitted that it was difficult to focus on football amid such heartbreaking news.

“It’s a very sad day. I struggle to find words, it is very difficult. You feel a little bit helpless in this situation. I can only say all my love to [Jota’s] family. It’s a big tragedy for them,” Maresca said.

Turning his attention to Neto’s availability, Maresca made it clear that any decision to play or sit out would be left entirely to the player.

“In terms of Pedro, he is very sad. Probably more than sad. We are close to Pedro to support him. Because I didn’t see him in training earlier. It’s completely Pedro’s decision [to play]. I had a chat this morning with Pedro. We support him. Any decision he will take is the correct one,” he added.

As Chelsea prepare to face Brazilian giants Palmeiras in a high-stakes quarter-final, the team’s spirit will be tested not only by the opposition but also by grief.
