What did Pep Guardiola say after Liverpool ended Manchester City’s four-year Premier League hegemony?

Pep Guardiola has offered his congratulations to Liverpool after they ended Manchester City’s sequence of four successive Premier League titles.

Guardiola’s team had dominated the English top flight in recent years, securing the league title in 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024.

However, City experienced a slight dip in form this season, currently occupying fourth position in the table and unable to challenge for the title in 2025.

Guardiola’s remarks after Liverpool claim Premier League

Despite not contending for the Premier League trophy, City have performed strongly in the FA Cup, reaching the final.

Following Man City’s semi-final victory over Nottingham Forest, Guardiola conveyed a respectful message to Arne Slot’s Liverpool side, expressing his hope that his team will challenge for the Premier League title in the upcoming season.

“Before we start, on behalf of myself and the club, we want to congratulate Liverpool for their Premier League victory,” Guardiola said.

“Well deserved, no doubt about that, a fantastic team. Give me one year, like it happened the last four years and hopefully next season we can do better and compete until the end of the season. Liverpool, congratulations.”

Liverpool secured the title after Sunday’s 5-1 hammering of Tottenham Hotspur, thereby confirming Arne Slot as the sixth manager to win the Premier League in his maiden season at a club.

The Dutchman, who replaced Jurgen Klopp last summer, has outdone expectations by claiming the club’s second Premier League crown and 20th overall, moving the Reds level with Manchester United.

As for Man City, they have Champions League participation to secure in the final weeks of the season as well as aim to win the FA Cup.

What next for Man City?

Guardiola’s team are back in league action on Friday when they host in-form Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Etihad Stadium.

The FA Cup final will be held on May 17, with the Cityzens facing Crystal Palace.
