Fans have urged current Manchester United players to look at the examples of Scott McTominay and Antony and consider Old Trafford exits to revitalise their careers

Scott McTominay has officially been crowned Serie A’s Best Overall Player for the 2024-25 season, just minutes after scoring the title-clinching goal for Napoli.

Thanks to his triumph, fans online are now urging other Manchester United players to follow his lead and find success elsewhere.

McTominay’s dream season ends with MVP glory and a Scudetto

If Scott McTominay’s move to Napoli raised eyebrows last summer, no one's questioning it now. The Scotland international has gone from squad player at Manchester United to Serie A champion and league MVP in under a year.

His final goal of the season, a sensational bicycle kick, opened the scoring in Napoli’s 2-0 win over Cagliari, which sealed the club’s fourth Serie A title.

McTominay ended the campaign with 12 goals and six assists in 34 appearances, a personal best, with eight of his strikes breaking deadlocks.

Speaking after Napoli were crowned Serie champions, McTominay said, “For me to come here and experience this, it’s just a dreaml”.

The league recognised his impact by naming him the best overall performer for the entire season after he was judged as the most impotant player statistically over the 38-game season.

Fans warn Manchester United players to leave Old Trafford

Following McTominay’s dream ending to the season, fans on social media were clear in their message to current Manchester United stars.

"Leave United and win something," became the rallying cry on X (formerly Twitter) as McTominay's triumph in Italy comes in stark contrast to Manchester United's own dismal campaign, where they finished in the bottom half of the Premier League and lost the Europa League final.

McTominay isn’t alone. On-loan winger Antony, who was also considered surplus to requirements, has rediscovered his spark at Real Betis, tallying eight goals and five assists since January.

Fans are now using McTominay’s success as Exhibit A in a growing theory: escaping Manchester United’s toxic environment might just be the only path to greatness.
