Chelsea's decision to snub Victor Osimhen has been slammed by a former Premier League star

Former Premier League defender Jose Fonte has criticised Chelsea for failing to sign Victor Osimhen during the January transfer window.

The Nigerian striker, often compared to Blues legend Didier Drogba, was linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2024, but ended up joining Galatasaray on loan from Napoli instead.

Fonte slams Chelsea for Osimhen snub

Osimhen has been one of the most sought-after strikers in Europe, yet Chelsea chose not to trigger his £113m release clause last summer.

Despite reports suggesting the London club was weighing up a January bid, no move materialised, and Osimhen remained in Turkey.

Speaking to BoyleSports, Fonte expressed his disappointment, saying, “Chelsea are crying out for a striker like Victor Osimhen.

“As a striker, he could be another Didier Drogba for them. He has pace, power, and technical quality. He wins his duels and is such a handful for defenders.”

Osimhen still destined for Premier League move?

Fonte, who has faced Osimhen in the Champions League, believes the Nigerian would thrive in England.

“When I saw Victor Osimhen go to Galatasaray, I thought it was foolish that no Premier League club had signed him,” Fonte said, adding, “Once Osimhen gets into the Premier League, I think he will bully defenders. He is aggressive, fast, clever, and powerful.”

Despite missing out on a move to Chelsea, Osimhen is still linked with a move to the Premier League in the near future, with clubs such as Arsenal and Manchester United keeping an eye on him, and Fonte, who holds Osimhen in high regard, believes the Nigerian will one day prove his worth in England.

“I can’t wait to see him in the Premier League because he’s one of those guys that you want to see against the very best. We will see that this is where he belongs,” Fonte concluded.

With Chelsea still struggling to find a consistent goal-scorer, the decision not to sign Osimhen could prove costly, especially if he shines in the Turkish Super Lig before making a high-profile move elsewhere.
