Hansi Flick sternly told Barcelona star to get with the program.

Barcelona’s head coach Hansi Flick recently had an uncomfortable conversation with second-choice goalkeeper Inaki Pena, which was said to have left a bitter taste in the shotstopper’s mouth.

Pena relegated

Following Ter Stegen’s lengthy injury, Pena, as the second-choice, inherited the starting berth. However, to cover their bases, Barcelona pulled Wojciech Szczesny out of retirement.

Given the Pole’s experience and quality before retiring, it was presumed by many he would immediately replace Pena; however, Flick stuck with the La Masia graduate.

That setting has changed in recent weeks, and the former Arsenal man is now Barcelona's first-choice goalie, as explicitly stated by the German coach himself.

The alleged conversation

While he was not necessarily brilliant in his time between the sticks, Pena barely put a foot wrong; hence, Flick's decision has come as a surprise to many, especially as the replacement, Szczesny has been erratic.

According to Diario Sport, Pena broached the subject with Flick, and the German was said to have been stern in his response, urging him to “accept the new reality.”

This, according to the report, left Pena feeling worse than before the meeting, and he is said to be contemplating an exit from the club in the summer.
