Messi’s critics
While he started his Herons career on a bright note, winning the Leagues Cup early on and going on to win the Supporters Shield, Messi's failure to deliver the MLS Cup and their recent exit from the Champions Cup attracted criticism.
After a dominant league campaign last season, the Miami outfit faltered in the playoffs, with Atlanta ending their run in the competition.
This season, they have not been as dominant in the league as they were last campaign and were recently dumped out of the Champions Cup by Vancouver.

All of this has meant that criticisms have been channelled Messi's way, but former Salt Lake defender Lalas was having none of it on the recent episode of the State of the Union podcast.
“Oh my goodness. I mean, I think that is ridiculous to argue that it has been a failure. I think no matter what happens the Messi time relative to Inter Miami is going to be viewed as a success,” he said.
“And when I say that I think it’s relative to attention that he has brought, the money that he has made, the moments that he has provided, and there are still many to come I think because I think he is going to be here at the very least through the 2026 World Cup and maybe even beyond. By all accounts he has enjoyed his time.”
