Ruben Amorim explained why he made only one substitution in the defeat at Tottenham.

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has explained why he was reluctant to make substitutions, despite his team chasing the game and seemingly needing reinforcements in the 1-0 defeat to Tottenham

James Maddison gave Spurs the lead as early as the 13th minute, and for the rest of the contest, both teams tried unsuccessfully to score the next goal. Ange Postecoglou exhausted his allowed substitutions in the pursuit. Amorim, on the other hand, only used one, and that itself came after the 90th minute.

Amorim's inactivity disappoints

Manchester United are ravaged by injuries; hence, for the trip to Tottenham today, only Victor Lindelof had Premier League experience on the Red Devils bench.

Grim as the situation might be, there was a sliver of excitement for Manchester United fans who hoped to see the Portuguese hand some of the teenagers their debut.

For a club so renowned for achieving success with homegrown talents, certainly, that sentiment was understandable. However, Amorim only made one substitution in the game, bringing on former Arsenal academy man Chido Obi Martin in the 91st minute, almost an afterthought.

Amorim explains himself

Speaking after the match, the Portuguese explained that he read the game, and given they were chasing, he did not want to thrust the youngsters into such high-charged environment.

"It is the hardest competition in the world,” Amorim said. “I am trying to be careful with them. I felt the team was pushing for the goal and I felt I don't want to change. But they will play.

"You try to read the game, understand what you see in training. The team were pushing for the goal and I didn't feel the need to change.”
