The new anthem
Since 1978, the Super Eagles have used the Arise O’ Compatriots anthem, composed by Pa Benedict Odiase.
However, in May last year, the Nigerian federal government decided to change the country’s first anthem as an independent nation, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.”
This change has been uneasy for sports stars, who have to sing along to the anthem during international sporting events. During the subsequent Super Eagles' clash after the anthem change, the Super Eagles stars were visibly mute, seemingly unfamiliar with the change in tune.
What Iwobi said
Nearly a year later, the anthem is still strange to Iwobi, who revealed he has had a tough time getting accustomed to it.
“No,” he replied Chinasa, who asked if he had learnt the new anthem, on the Is This Seat Taken podcast. “When it comes on, I literally just stand there and close my eyes,” Iwobi finished.
