'I cried myself to sleep, I contemplated suicide' - Newcastle star's heartbreaking confession

Callum Wilson has opened up about the hardships he faced during his childhood and his past suicidal thoughts.

The England international has been one of Newcastle's best players in the last couple of years.

He joined the Magpies in 2020 from Bournemouth for £20m and signed a four-year deal with the club.

Wilson confession

Newcastle striker Callum Wilson's candid revelations about his troubled childhood and suicidal thoughts have deeply moved many.

During Mental Health Awareness Week in England, Wilson opened up about his mental health struggles on the High Performance podcast, via Sportal, "I would cry myself to sleep... I was thinking about ways to end my life," he confessed.

The English forward then admitted that football was his lifeline, saying, "It was my escape, my savior. A place where I could express my aggression without consequences."

Despite his successful career, Wilson revealed he faces new challenges, including a gambling addiction and intense anger issues. "I spoke to my wife, but I didn't want to burden her.

"She's not my therapist. I had to seek help elsewhere. Therapy was an investment in myself and helped me understand my childhood trauma," he concluded.
