Chelsea could decide between playing in the Champions League or Europa League next season.

With the Premier League guaranteed up to nine slots in European competitions next season, the permutations can be difficult to keep up with. However, Chelsea serve as a nexus point, as they hold the destiny of more clubs in their hands than any other team in the division.

The Premier League in Europe

As it stands, the Premier League will get at least nine teams in Europe next season. However, that number could reach ten depending on Chelsea and Crystal Palace.

With Manchester United and Tottenham squaring up in the Europa League final, the EPL is guaranteed six places in next season’s Champions League. The top five in the league plus the winner of the Europa League.

The Europa League would go to the 6th-placed team plus the winner of the FA Cup (Manchester City or Crystal Palace). Chelsea would also qualify for the Europa League if they fail to make UCL through the league and beat Real Betis in the UECL final.

If Manchester City win the FA Cup but qualify for UCL through the league, the Europa League slot goes to the seventh-placed team on the log. If Crystal Palace win, they increase EPL representation in the EPL to three teams. Newcastle have already qualified for the Conference League after winning the EFL Cup. However, the UECL slot for next season would go to the eighth-placed team if Newcastle qualified for the UCL through the league.

Permutations concerning Chelsea

If Chelsea wins the Conference League and finishes in the top five, nothing changes in the European competition lineup. However, if they finish sixth, the Premier League gets an extra team in the Europa League, and the Europa League spot originally meant for fifth place goes to seventh place.

If Chelsea finishes sixth and wins the Conference League, they'll play in the Europa League. If they finish seventh and win the Conference League, they'll also play in the Europa League, and the Premier League surrenders the Conference League spot. The Europa League spot for sixth place would then go to eighth place.

If Chelsea qualifies for the Champions League and wins the Conference League, they can choose between competing in the Champions League or Europa League as European titleholders. The rule of choosing is put in place to protect lesser-ranked European leagues that have to go through the UCL playoffs.

They get the chance to decide between going directly into Europa League as earned by winning the Conference League, or trying the UCL playoffs, which would have been earned from their domestic league position.
