Premier League title contenders Arsenal, could stand to benefit significantly if this change comes into effect.
Football’s clampdown on time-wasting
Football lawmakers, led by the International Football Association Board (IFAB), are trialling a rule that penalises goalkeepers holding onto the ball for more than eight seconds. Instead of the traditional indirect free kick, the opposition would now be awarded a corner.
Trials in the Premier League’s U21 competition and Italy's U20 league have shown promising results, drastically reducing instances of time-wasting. The deterrent effect is clear, as coaches are unlikely to tolerate goalkeepers gifting such prime attacking opportunities.
Patrick Nelson of the Irish FA explained, “The wrath of any coach for a goalkeeper giving away a corner is enough to ensure the behaviour changes.” If implemented, this rule promises to speed up play and create more dynamic matches.
Arsenal set to benefit from new rule
Arsenal have emerged as masters of set pieces, particularly corners, under Mikel Arteta. The Gunners lead Europe’s top five leagues in goals from corners since last season, having netted 22 times from the set piece.
With players like Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice providing pinpoint deliveries, Arsenal’s threat from set plays is unmatched.
The proposed rule could give Arsenal an even greater edge if opponents are unable to avoid conceding numerous corners from time-wasting punishments in addition to open play. Arteta’s side, already lethal in such situations, would undoubtedly capitalise on this potential advantage.
As discussions continue, Arsenal fans may have another reason to cheer if the FA implements a rule that aligns perfectly with their team's strengths.
