Barcelona return to pole position after beating Real Sociedad at Montjuic.

A dominant performance from Barcelona saw them beat Real Sociedad 4-0 and one point clear at the top of the log, deposing Atletico Madrid.

The Rojiblancos’s triumph over fourth-placed Athletic Club saw them rise to the top of the standings. With goals from Gerrard Martin, Marc Casado, Ronald Araujo and Robert Lewandowski, the Blaugrana returned to pole position.

Key match details

Real Sociedad started brilliantly and even found the back of the net inside the first five minutes, but saw the goal ruled out for offside.

Barcelona slowly played themselves into the game and earned a huge advantage in the 17th minute, when Aritz Elustondo committed a professional last-man foul on Dani Olmo.

The Blaugrana capitalised on the numerical advantage and opened the scoring in the 25th minute through a well-worked team effort. Lamine Yamal left his marker in the dust before cutting back to Olmo, who expertly picked out the unmarked Gerrard Martin. The young left back finished with aplomb to give Flick’s side the lead. Olmo was involved in the second goal as well, laying it off for Marc Casado to double Barcelona's advantage.

Hansi Flick's side continued to play in La Reale’s half in the second half. They got their third just before the hour mark through a Ronald Araujo header, rebounding Lewandowski’s initial strike.

The duo combined for Barcelona's fourth on the evening, as Lewandowski's redirected an Araujo shot towards goal and past Alex Remiro.

Ferran Torres and Pedri both hit the woodwork in Barcelona's search for a fifth, but La Reale prevented the scoreline from getting any worse.

With the win, the Blaugrana are now one point clear at the top of the log. Real Sociedad, on the other hand, failed to claw back the margin on the European places after Betis’s win against Real Madrid put them four points clear.
